The Nature Conservancy and the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, in cooperation with their Natural Capital Project partners, the World Wildlife Fund and the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment, are pleased to invite you to a public event on Integrating Natural Capital into Decisions. The event will feature leading academics and practitioners in the field of ecosystem services as well as experts from the public and non-profit sectors, addressing core sustainability challenges of the 21st century.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s visit will highlight the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN, part of a larger trip to the Bay Area to commemorate the San Francisco Conference, where the charter establishing the UN was signed in 1945. After his speech, he will participate in a question and answer session with Ambassador Kathleen Stephens, the U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Korea (2008-11). Seating is first come, first served. This event will be streaming live from the Center event page.

Fundamentals of Reservoir Simulation featuring Instructors: Khalid Aziz, Otto N. Miller Professor in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, Emeritus and Affiliate, Woods Institute; Lou Durlofsky, Otto N. Miller Professor in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and Affiliate, Woods Institute; and Hamdi Tchelepi, Professor of Energy Resources Engineering. This course will cover both fundamentals and selected advanced topics in reservoir simulation. It is intended for simulation developers and users who wish to strengthen their understanding of the fundamentals of this technology. The emphasis of the course is on the mathematical description and physical understanding of the underlying equations. Though the emphasis of the course is not on the actual use of a simulator, the practical implications of many of the concepts will be discussed. The course is not credited to a Stanford University degree.

Modern Well Testing Analysis Shortcourse featuring Instructor: Roland Horne, Thomas Davies Barrow Professor of Earth Sciences and Senior Fellow by Courtesy, Woods Institute. This course will cover both the philosophy and the practice of well test analysis and design, in the context of modern, computer-aided approaches. The course will use a series of real well test examples. These examples include a wide variety of different kinds of tests from operating fields worldwide. Participants will have the opportunity for hands-on practice using computers during the course, and may also bring along data of their own for discussion or investigation.

The Environmental Forum informs the Stanford community about a broad range of environmental issues and solutions through presentation and discussion by global experts from within Stanford and other leading academic institutions, government, NGOs, foundations and business. The forum is open to Stanford faculty, graduate students, postdocs, and staff.
MARINE Graduate Seminar Series Seminar »
MARINE (Monterey Area Research Institutions' Network for Education) hosts a bi-monthly seminar series. Most seminars are preceded by journal club sessions held either at Stanford, UC Santa Cruz, and in the Monterey area where students discuss the background on the topic and prepare questions for the seminar. Seminar topics this year will include: ocean acidification, desalination, and salmon and dams. The MARINE program, an initiative sponsored by the Center for Ocean Solutions, facilitates exchange among students by providing an array of inter-institutional activities such as courses, seminars, and workshops, which create opportunities for students to apply their training to ocean challenges and engage in real world problem-solving and policy recommendations. It is a collaboration of seven academic campuses: CSU Monterey Bay, Hopkins Marine Station, Monterey Institute of International Studies, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, Naval Postgraduate School, Stanford University, and UC Santa Cruz.
