Configuring Your Cable Modem Internet Service

This document provides instructions for connecting a desktop computer to Stanford's internet service, provided by IT Services (Information Technology Services). Only PC-compatibles running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista, or Macintosh computers running Mac OS X, are supported. These instructions assume you have a computer equipped with either a built-in ethernet port or an ethernet network interface card.

General network information

The computer network in Stanford West is a cable modem system, not unlike what you might get from Comcast or other cable TV vendors. You will receive an Arris WBM 760A cable modem from IT Services. You should not purchase your own cable modem or DSL router, as IT services will not support any problems encountered by client-provided cable modem or DSL routers. If you remove the provided cable modem and substitute another, the service will automatically disconnect. If you need additional ethernet ports, we recommend a simple ethernet hub or switch.

You are allowed up to five concurrent connections for each cable modem. You may register more than five computers but, only five can communicate through your cable modem at a time. If you need more than five active connections, it is highly recommended that you get an additional cable modem connection, as that will also increase your bandwidth.
