Faculty may designate up to two proxies to borrow library materials in their name. A Proxy SUL Cardholder (typically a hired research assistant or department staff) is allowed to check out library materials in the name of the sponsoring faculty member with the same loan periods offered to the sponsor. The sponsor is responsible for all materials borrowed by proxies, including fines and fees. 

Who is eligible?  

• Stanford University faculty
• Emeritus faculty
• Stanford-appointed Visiting Professors
• Academic staff with a teaching appointment

Who may serve as a proxy?

Regular Stanford University employees, registered Stanford students, and other hired research assistants are eligible to serve as proxies. Eligible proxies must possess a current University ID for building access; the SUL Proxy Card may only be used for borrowing.

How does it work?

Designated proxies may present the SUL Proxy Card at any library to check out materials for the faculty sponsor. Materials will be due using the same schedule as the sponsor, or on the expiration date of the Proxy SUL Card (whichever occurs first). Circulation notices such as recall notices, overdue reminders, and notices regarding fines or fees will be sent to the sponsoring faculty member. Sponsors can view proxy charges, requested items, or bills in My Account for sponsors. SUL Proxy cardholders may view the same information via My Account for proxies using their Proxy SUL Card Library ID number. 

Apply for a Proxy SUL Card

To apply, the sponsor must complete the Proxy Application.  Proxy SUL Cards may be issued for periods from one month to one year, as specified by the sponsoring faculty member. If abuse of the proxy privilege occurs, the privilege may be suspended or revoked.
