Disrupting Biotech: The Silicon Valley Approach, Vijay Pande
Gunn-SIEPR Building, Koret-Taube Conference Center, Room 120 Biotech companies have been critical to advances in medicine, but are notoriously challenging and risky enterprises, with many chances for failure. In contrast, software companies have had great success in the last decade, with numerous examples of billion dollar companies being formed by small teams and minimal initial capital. Professor Pande will discuss how we’ve reached an inflection point, where Bio companies now can operate much like software companies, with the predicted impact of radical changes to come in the next decade.

Meet across the street from the Alumni Center; bus begins boarding at 1:10 p.m. On this docent led tour, visit Stanford's new Central Energy Facility to learn about the heating and cooling and power systems that power the majority of the 8,000+ acre campus. The innovative new design utilizes heat recovery and thermal storage to cut the university's greenhouse gas emissions by 68% and potable water consumption by 15%. Open House: Literary Treasures of Special Collections with Professor Elaine Treharne
Meet in the Rotunda of the Bing wing of the Green Library In this special opening of Stanford’s Special Collections for alumni, professor Elaine Treharne and John Mustain, Curator of Rare Books, will show and discuss some of our notable literary books and manuscripts. These will include an 18th century edition of Milton’s Paradise Lost, signed by both Thomas Jefferson and James Madison; the early thirteenth-century Prayerbook of Henry VIII’s mother, Elizabeth of York; John Steinbeck’s own annotated copy of the Medieval classic, Le Morte DArthur; and the huge music book of the newly canonized missionary, Junipero Serra. Elaine Treharne is the Roberta Bowman Denning professor of the humanities and co-director of the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies. Elaine is fascinated by what new technologies can do for users of medieval manuscripts, especially those with no access to the real thing. She’s working on The Sensual Book and is particularly drawn to the absorbing human stories that can be discovered from clues left by book producers and users. |

Pac-12 Plaza Theta Breakers is an annual 5k/10k walk/run around Stanford's beautiful campus.
