Geriatric Clinical Fellowship
Objective
The Geriatric Medicine Clinical Fellowship is a joint program between Stanford University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. Both Stanford University and VA Palo Alto Health Care System have multiple nationally recognized programs in geriatrics, and the geriatric medicine fellowship program provides outstanding training opportunities to contribute to the improvement of clinical practice and to advance scholarly pursuits that will benefit elderly veterans and all older Americans.
Many of the core program activities are based at the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, which offers a strong academic and clinical environment rich in opportunities for geriatrics care and research. Satisfactory completion of this one year integrated curriculum meets the training portion needed as part of the eligibility requirements for Board Certification in Geriatrics. The one-year fellowship also serves as the foundation for further research training for those who wish to pursue research-oriented academic careers in geriatrics.
The core curriculum includes clinical experiences that emphasize:
- Longitudinal outpatient primary care for older adults
- Outpatient interdisciplinary team care for elders needing specialized geriatric care, palliative care, geriatric psychiatry, rehabilitative medicine, home based care, and community and VA-based nursing home care
- Training in teaching and educational scholarship

Eligibility
Physicians must have completed an ACGME or AOA accredited residency in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine at the time of starting the fellowship, and already be certified or actively pursuing board certification in their primary specialty.
Stanford does not sponsor graduates of international medical schools on H-1B visas. All applications should be submitted electronically through ERAS website, and must include a completed ERAS application, current curriculum vitae, a one-page personal statement of interest, and three letters of recommendation, including one from the residency program director.
