Land Use and Environmental Planning (including Cultural and Biological Resources)

Back to resources list

Land Use and Environmental Planning (LUEP) is responsible for overseeing land use entitlements and planning approvals, across all jurisdictions in which Stanford land is located. This includes oversight and monitoring of the General Use Permit, or GUP.

Land Use and Environmental Planning is your resource if:

  • Your project is affected by the General Use Permit (GUP)
  • You require Architectural and Site Approval (ASA)
  • Your project might affect sensitive biological resources, such as the California tiger salamander (CTS)
  • Your project involves any of the following:
    • A change in overall square footage
    • A housing project with a change in the number of beds
    • Ground disturbances near Lagunita, creeks or wetlands
    • A site outside central campus requiring planning approval

Stanford has many cultural resources which are protected under local, state and federal regulations. The Department of Heritage Services safeguards Stanford’s cultural resources which include archaeological sites and historic structures on Stanford lands.

Heritage Services can assist you with questions involving:

  • Historic buildings (those more than 50 years old)
  • Archaeological sites, which are sometimes uncovered during construction

Tips for Land Use and Environmental Planning

  • Most DMP projects on campus do not require an ASA to obtain a permit from Santa Clara County
  • The ASA process can take 3 – 5 months
  • Contact Heritage Services in advance of any work, if your project requires grading or trenching
