Utilities and Sustainability
Project managers should always consider how their project might impact other parts of the building as it relates to energy use and sustainability. Even a small project can cause comfort issues to adjacent spaces and increase energy use. Sustainability and Energy Management (SEM) will help you determine what effect your project will have on the different utility services in a building. Affected utilities might include:
- HVAC
- Chilled or hot water
- Water service and plumbing
- Fire suppression and sprinklers
- Sanitary sewer (more common for lab renovations and kitchens)
- Storm drains
SEM can also find ways to meet sustainability goals in your construction project. Examples include:
- Choosing sustainable building materials
- Reusing or recycling construction debris
- Recommendations of fixtures that reduce water and energy use
Tips for Utilities and Sustainability
- Consult the Facilities Design Guidelines for sustainability and energy management standards
- Whenever possible, recycle construction waste
- Remember that all carpet can be recycled
- Contact SEM during the planning phase of your project using the Utility Service Application
