Welcome to the Stanford Clinical Opportunity for Residency Experience (SCORE). SCORE recognizes that Stanford Medicine’s ideal of true community engagement is unlikely to occur without a workforce that is diverse in many ways. This includes individuals who are underrepresented in medicine, socially, economically, or educationally disadvantaged, and others whose backgrounds and experiences would diversify their clinical fields. Goals

The specific goals of SCORE are to (1) increase the recruitment of diverse trainees into academic medicine, (2) provide education and career development in support of Stanford Medicine’s mission, (3) enhance the educational experience of Stanford medical students by increasing interactions with trainees from diverse backgrounds, and (4) foster opportunities for collaboration with other institutions where the visiting trainees are based.

Program Description

  • SCORE brings fourth-year medical students from diverse backgrounds to Stanford for a four-week residential clinical training program in one of the clinical departments at:
  • SCORE students will be matched with faculty and resident mentors who share similar clinical interests
  • The students will participate in mentorship activities with a clinical advisor, as well as clinical rotations, programs, and activities with Stanford medical students
  • If desired, they may also be connected with a research advisor
  • The choice of subspecialty elective will be made in conjunction with the department and will depend on availability of that elective and the completion of required information for visiting students

Application Criteria

  • The student must be in good academic standing and enrolled in their fourth or final year M.D. or D.O. degree program during their elective rotation at Stanford - current 3rd year medical students (rising 4th year students)
  • The student must also be from a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association
  • Applicants must express strong interest in applying to a Stanford residency program. Selection will be based on past clinical and academic achievement
  • Applicants will write an essay describing how they believe that their background and experience would contribute to diversity, broadly defined in SCORE
  • If applicable, students must have completed the core clerkship relating to the department that they have chosen to do the elective (e.g. if interested in pursuing an elective in pediatric infectious diseases, the student must have already completed the core clerkship in pediatrics at their medical school)
  • Each participating Department will select its own participants

What Students Can Anticipate

  • SCORE will award a $2,000 stipend at the beginning of the rotation
  • In addition to the stipend, SCORE will provide housing to the student for the duration of the rotation
  • SCORE will waive the $200 standard application fee
  • SCORE students receive mentorship from outstanding Stanford faculty members
  • SCORE students participate in special program activities designed to form connections with Stanford faculty, residents, and students
  • SCORE collaborates with other units like the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity, Graduate Medical Education, Center of Excellence in Diversity in Medical Education, and Stanford University Minority Medical Alliance, among many others, to promote a robust experience during the student's rotation
  • If the SCORE student has additional research interests, there may be the opportunity to participate in a scholarly research program

Application Requirements

Students interested in the SCORE program must submit:

  1. Completed online application
  2. Dean's Statement Form
  3. Personal statement (describe how you believe your background and experience would contribute to diversity, Include why you want to rotate with the particular department)
  4. Letters of Recommendation
  5. Curriculum Vitae
  6. Official medical school transcript

Initial application review is performed by the Office of Medical Student Affairs. The  application is then submitted to the Department that the student wants to rotate in for review and selection.

Please Note: If you are an International medical student with your home school located outside the US, you are NOT eligible for this program. International medical students can access specific program information via this link.

Transportation

Students will be housed as close to their elective locations as possible. Below are forms of transportation generally used by Stanford students.

  • Marguerite Shuttle is Stanford’s Free Shuttle Service. See shuttle lines map here
  • Caltrain is a commuter rail service that runs along the San Francisco Peninsula. Here is a System Map and a How to Ride guide. Riders can connect to the Marguerite Shuttle at Palo Alto Transit Center, California Avenue, and Menlo Park stations
  • BART is a public transportation system that serves the San Francisco Bay Area. Riders can connect to the Caltrain at the BART Millbrae station
