Exploring the Scholarly Concentrations

Each student must declare a Scholarly Concentration along with a course plan and general project description. It is recommended that four-year students declare by June 1 of the first year. All students must declare by September 1 of the second year.

Students explore SC opportunities during the first year and decide on a course and general scholarship plan. An online declaration form is completed by the student, reviewed by the mentor, and finally signed-off by the Director(s) of the appropriate SC areas. Within their SC, students participate in activities including the INDE 297 RRAP Day's SC Breakouts and all other events planned by the SC Directors. Students may complete an Annual Progress Report to record their progress and facilitate communication with SC Directors.

Students need to submit an online completion form by July 1 before their intended graduation in order for SC Directors to prepare comments for students' MSPE letters.  All students must meet the requirements of the SC program no later than six months prior to graduation (finish courses and present scholarly work results).

Declaring a Scholarly Concentration

Each student must declare a Scholarly Concentration along with a course plan and general project description. It is recommended that four-year students declare by June 1 of the first year. All students must declare by September 1 of the second year.

Basic declaration steps:

1. Select one of the existing foundation areas or design one independently.

2. Select an application area, if applicable.

3. Define general course plan, scholarship goals, and learning objectives.

4. Determine how the learning plan (aka "course plan") will be completed over a four- or five-year period.

5. Fill out the Scholarly Concentration Online Declaration Form; including: a course plan, learning objectives, and a general description of the intended scholarship.

6. Submit the online form, which will be approved by your mentor and SC Director(s).

The course plan, scholarly project idea, and learning objectives statements, serve as a baseline (or "memo of understanding") for discussion between the student and Scholarly Concentration Director
