Clerkships and Rotations: Medical Students and Residents

The Nephrology division encourages all medical students and residents to participate and learn from our clinical activities at all our training sites.  There is a strong emphasis on teaching on our services and the trainee can expect to learn important concepts such as clearance, approach to the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic renal failure, dialysis and other nephrologic principles. All trainees will be given careful guidance and feedback from the attending faculty. 

Stanford Consult Service

The student or resident will be exposed to a wide variety of hospital-based nephrological problems with emphasis on critically ill patients with renal failure, usually acute, in the various intensive care units of the hospital. Students will be asked to follow 2-3 patients on the service with supervision from the Nephrology fellow and attending. Residents may be asked to follow more patients, and will be closely supervised by the attending faculty. There are 2 outpatient clinics per week that the trainee will be expected to attend, where he or she will learn about outpatient management of chronic kidney disease, including patients on dialysis.

Stanford Inpatient Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Service

This rotation introduces students and residents to the treatment of end-stage renal disease with kidney transplantation and the treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus with pancreas transplantation. The student and resident will learn about transplantation in general and how organs are allocated. He or she will also learn and help manage complications associated with the transplantation procedure, preoperative period, and post-transplant complications including organ rejection. There is a weekly pathology conference where the student and resident will learn how to interpret biopsies of transplanted kidneys.

Stanford offers opportunities for visiting clerkships for students who are in a year M.D. or D.O. program at a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association.
