Overview

From benchtop research to international programs, the Department of Surgery provides exceptional patient care, delivers outstanding undergraduate and graduate education, and furthers the field of surgery through innovative basic science and clinical research. The tradition of academic and clinical excellence established by the first Chair, Dr. Emile Holman, in 1926, continues through Dr. Thomas Krummel and the work of 67 faculty, 130 adjunct and affiliated clinical faculty, 155 residents and fellows, and 250 staff.  We are the 10th ranked Department of Surgery for NIH research funding granted.  We occupy over 40,000 sq ft of space in 18 different locations. 

Our faculty practice and teach at several sites throughout the region including Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Medical Center, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente/Santa Clara, and Good Samaritan Hospital.
