The Europe Center (TEC) Austria Visitor Program (formerly, Advanced Graduate Student Travel Scholarships) is part of the Stanford-Austria scholarly exchange program hosted jointly by TEC at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), and the University of Vienna in Austria.  These fellowships are intended to support Stanford graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program in one of Stanford's seven schools, with special emphasis on the Social Sciences and Humanities.  The scholarships are especially appropriate for graduate students who have reached the advanced stages of their doctoral research.

This limited number of grants is intended to help support principally short- to medium-term research visits (two to four weeks or up to an academic term) to work with faculty, libraries and archives in Austria.  Research projects that address regional issues and require travel to other Central European institutions of higher learning and affiliated scholarly libraries and archives in Central Europe may also be applicable.

Benefits

Austria Visitor Program grants may be used to help support part of the cost of travel and/or research costs necessary to complete the research during the visit (e.g. photocopying, research library access fees, etc.)

Students are allowed and encouraged to apply for other sources of funding to support the full cost of their research travel.

Eligibility

Students enrolled in a doctoral degree program at Stanford University who have completed graduate program preliminary course work and have begun advanced work on a dissertation or thesis are eligible to apply for this fellowship. Travel must be completed while the student is matriculated in a program at Stanford.

Application Process

Applicants must submit a completed online application form, including uploading the required accompanying documents  These include:  cover letter, written description of project, budget, resume, unofficial transcript of Stanford courses, and attestation of proficiency in the language(s) of the project site, and a letter of recommendation by your thesis advisor.  It is also recommended that you submit a letter of recommendation by a faculty member of the hosting Austrian institution.
