The purpose of the WEST (Water Energy Smart Technology) Summit was to catalyze a transformational change in the way the Silicon Valley delivers and uses energy and water. Stanford Woods Institute Director Buzz Thompson provided welcoming remarks, followed by three panel discussions, including one on "Innovation in Business Structures and Models" with Stanford Woods Institute Senior Fellow Craig Criddle and others. The summit is presented by Sustainable Silicon Valley.

"Seeing the Forest for the Bees: Pollination Subsidies from Forests to Farmers"
Taylor Ricketts (Ph.D., Stanford) leads a broad range of activities at WWF, from research on the scientific foundations of conservation to providing technical assistance to conservation programs on the ground. He is co-founder of the Natural Capital Project, a partnership among Stanford, WWF and The Nature Conservancy to map ecosystem services, estimate their value and use this information to inform and finance conservation investments.

A symposium hosted jointly by the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and Bio-X focused on how environmental change and human activity are altering evolution. The goal was to bring together speakers from different fields and parts of the University in order to bring this subject into the spotlight for our faculty, students and community.
Keynote Speaker: Vicki Chandler, Chief Program Officer, Science at Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
Diverse aspects of this theme from epidemiology to the oceans were considered in 30 minute presentations by Stanford faculty, including Deborah Gordon, Gary Schoolnik, Eric Lambin and Barbara Block.Closing remarks by Donald Kennedy were followed by a Networking Reception and a Poster Session. Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP and the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment hosted an interactive discussion with representatives from the key gubernatorial campaigns. The focus was exclusively on the role of Sacramento -- and the next governor -- in maintaining California's leadership in the cleantech industry.
Cleantech and climate change will be at the forefront of this year's gubernatorial election. This interactive forum provided an opportunity to hear from and be heard by the people who will shape that debate. The event was hosted by Don Kennedy, Stanford Woods Institute senior fellow and former president of Stanford, and Craig Moyer, chair of the Land Environment & Energy Division of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP.
