In addition to answering questions about mosquitoes, District staff can provide information on a variety of other insects. District residents are invited to contact the Laboratory for answers to questions or concerns about insects found around homes or gardens. The District frequently receives requests for information about various arthropods such as honeybees, spiders, digger bee colonies, “potato bugs,” and other pests. If you need an insect identified, contact the Entomology Laboratory at (650) 344-8592. It is best if the organism is intact, live or dead. Please include your name, contact information, and the address, park, or recreation area where your specimen was found.
Specimens can be brought into our District Office at 1351 Rollins Road, Burlingame, CA 94010 or it can be sent by mail to the District Office. District personnel will contact you as soon as possible with the specimen’s identification. If you are bitten by a tick and would like to have the tick tested for Lyme disease, please make sure that the tick remains alive and is contained in a slightly humid environment like a small jar or a plastic bag containing a moist piece of paper towel.
