Acquisitions Editor, History & Jewish Studies

Stanford University Press seeks an energetic, experienced publishing professional to acquire scholarly and trade books in American, European, and world history and Jewish studies. Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, this individual will play a key role in the development and shaping of these lists for the Press.

Responsibilities include acquiring and developing 25 titles per year, soliciting and evaluating proposals and manuscripts, working with series editors, preparing publishing plans to present to the editorial board, negotiating contracts with authors or agents, and consulting with production and marketing. The acquisitions editor works closely with authors, as well as a shared editorial assistant, to ensure that manuscripts are of high quality, well prepared, and meet scholarly, market, and financial expectations. The acquisitions editor is expected to travel to scholarly conferences and university campuses. Title and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Marketing Manager

Stanford University Press is seeking a strategic, innovative thinker to lead the development and implementation of marketing activities for the full range of the Press’s list. We are looking for someone to lead our team and create new opportunities for us to promote and sell our books.

Core Duties*:

  • Recommend, manage, and execute integrated marketing plans/programs and strategies.
  • Develop and manage the communication and brand strategy for book program(s) incorporating appropriate channels (i.e. web presence, digital, and print).
  • Manage market research and analyses of campaigns, programs, services, and events used to inform decisions regarding strategic marketing direction, product segmentation, and customer targeting.
  • Assess market opportunities and track market trends. Recommend marketing improvements based on findings.
  • Responsibility for staff including the recruitment, management, development, and retention.
  • Manage program budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Guide event planning and execution as needed to support marketing objectives.
  • Manage vendors on specific projects.
  • Occasional domestic travel to academic conferences.

Sales and Exhibits Manager 

The Sales and Exhibits Manager has overall responsibility for all aspects of the exhibits program, and is the key liaison for the Press in all matters relating to sales of books. S/he is also the primary contact between the Press and our US and International distribution partners.

Core Duties*:

  • Monitor and report on weekly, monthly, quarterly sales
  • Liaise with distributors (US and international) for information exchange regarding catalog, title, and sales data
  • Analyze sales trends and advise on strategies to maximize performance
  • Liaise with authors on sales opportunities, including special sales and events
  • Create annual exhibit schedule for 25 exhibits plus 15-20 co-op booths
  • Book conference booths and furniture
  • Coordinate space ad in conference program (when desired)
  • Create book list and circulate for comment
  • Order books from warehouse and generate title-on-display list and order form
  • Attend 3-4 exhibits annually
  • Coordinate return shipping from booth
  • Tally conference sales
  • Participate, in advisory role, to editorial committee discussions on new projects
  • Consult on semi-annual catalog, and annual subject catalogs
  • Plan and execute events to support marketing objectives
  • Manage vendors/consultants on sepcific projects
  • Manage project/program budget(s) and coordinate invoice processing
  • May oversee interns and other contingent staff; provide staff training

Sales and Marketing Assistant

Stanford University Press seeks an energetic individual to join our sales and marketing team as Sales and Marketing Assistant. This is an entry level position within an active and entrepreneurial department, supporting all aspects of sales, marketing, and publicity for the Press's publishing program. 

Core Duties*:

  • Answer the phones, and serve as a resource on unit procedures and general inquiries from authors or vendors.
  • Disseminate routine communications such as memos, notices, emails, and letters.
  • Serve as liaison with domestic and foreign distributors.
  • Perform office duties including, but not limited to, handling of ingoing and outgoing mail, entering data into basic tables, reports, database, or spreadsheets, and making copies.
  • Create and maintain files and filing systems.
  • May provide guidance to temporary and student employees on routine matters.
