STANFORD-AFFILIATED LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

Stanford-Peking University Summer Program: Stanford conducts an intensive language program during the summer quarter which allows the student to cover in nine weeks of concentrated study as much work in Chinese as is done in a regular academic year course.

Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies (IUC): First established in Tokyo in 1963, IUC is the premiere American program for the teaching of advanced Japanese and is governed by a committee of scholars representing 17 universities with strong, established graduate programs in Japanese studies. Stanford University currently administers the IUC, which offers both academic year and summer programs.

Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies (IUP): Stanford is a consortium member of IUP at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, which offers year-round programs for intermediate and advanced Chinese language study. IUP was formerly known as “The Stanford Center,” when the program was located in Taipei, Taiwan from 1963 to 1997. The University of California, Berkeley, currently administers this program.

STANFORD-AFFILIATED OVERSEAS OPPORTUNITIES

Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP): Among other international locations, Stanford University offers undergraduate study abroad programs in Kyoto, Japan and Beijing, China.

Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS) through BOSP: Established in 1989, the Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS), is a rigorous, two-semester academic program primarily for undergraduates wishing to do advanced work in the Japanese language and in Japanese studies. The program is open to all qualified students who have completed two or more years of college-level Japanese language at the time of enrollment. KCJS is administered by Columbia University on behalf of Stanford and the other 13 American university members of the consortium. Stanford students may apply for one or two of the six semester slots supported by the Bing Overseas Studies Program. Students who are accepted for these positions remain enrolled at Stanford while studying at KCJS, giving them uninterrupted eligibility for financial aid and allowing their courses and grades to be recorded directly on their transcripts.

Stanford Global Studies Internship Program: Stanford Global Studies (SGS) supports internship positions in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Mongolia, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand for students in East Asian Studies. Internship positions cover a wide spectrum of business, non-profit, media, educational, medical, technology and government activities. East Asia Internships are open to undergraduate students in all majors and CEAS MA students. Each internship participant must commit to full-time work (a minimum of 35 hours per week) for eight (8) weeks.

The Haas Center for Public Service: The Center offers international service opportunities and resources.

Stanford in Government (SIG) Fellowships: Stanford in Government has fellowships in Asia.

BEAM: Bridging Education, Ambition & Meaningful Work: Resources for work, internship, and volunteer opportunities abroad.

Overseas Resource Center (ORC): Information on several overseas opportunities including internship, work, and study abroad programs.

Volunteers in Asia (VIA): VIA Stanford Programs unite Stanford and Asian University students through short-term, cross-cultural education programs. Programs vary in focus and include such topics as service-learning, healthcare, language, and social issues.

Asia Technology Initiative (ATI): A student-organized entrepreneurship program. It provides summer internship opportunities in China, Taiwan and India.

NON-STANFORD-AFFILIATED OVERSEAS OPPORTUNITIES

Bing Overseas Studies Resource Library: BOSP maintains a resource library of non-Stanford study abroad opportunities. The resource library is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., except University holidays and during the winter closure. BOSP will conduct transfer credit evaluations of all coursework completed abroad during undergraduate studies at Stanford. BOSP is located on the ground floor of Sweet Hall.

Freeman Asia: Information and financial assistance for study in Asia. Opportunities include China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Institute of International Education (IIE): Funding and programs for language study, internships and research in East Asia:

National Security Education Program (NSEP): Funding opportunity for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students.

Critical Language Scholarships: Funding from the United States Department of State and the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) for summer intensive language learning: Chinese and Korean.

The Asia Foundation: Internship opportunities in Asian affairs and Asian exchange programs.

China Scholarship Council (CSC): Study abroad, international exchange and scholarship programs.

Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO): Educational exchange, scholarship, study and work opportunities in Taiwan.

Gilman International Scholarship Program: Offers grants for undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad.

The Blakemore Foundation: Offer fellowships for advanced Asian language study.

Bridging Scholarships: Offer scholarships for study in Japan.

Council Exchanges: Teach or study in China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

WorldTeach: WorldTeach volunteers in the China program teach in secondary school-based English camps in Hunan Province.

Global Volunteers: Volunteer to teach English and assist with community development projects in China.

StudyAbroad: A good resource to find study, volunteer, or intern opportunities abroad.

International Cooperative Education (ICE): Work and internship opportunities in Japan and China.

IAESTE: International exchange, leadership training, global skill development, and technical education; opportunities in China and Japan.

Alliances Abroad: Opportunities to teach English throughout China
