In January 2015, Gordon and Betty Moore finalized a Statement of Founders’ Intent to provide guidance to the Trustees and Management of the organization. This document articulates our founders’ motivations for creating the foundation and explains their interest in each of the areas in which we focus our grantmaking.

- Science: We invest in the development of new technologies, support the world’s top research scientists and bring together new – often groundbreaking – scientific partnerships.
- Environmental Conservation: We balance long-term conservation with sustainable use to protect critical ecosystems.
- Patient Care: We improve the experience and outcomes of patient care.
- San Francisco Bay Area: We foster, preserve, and enhance the special character of the Bay Area, where the foundation can make a difference consistent with the founders’ values.
