SGD Video Tutorials: Genome Browser (GBrowse)

The Generic Genome Browser, developed by Lincoln Stein (Stein et al., 2002), allows genomic sequence to be overlaid with functional annotations to provide visual access to genome features. Genomic sequence can be viewed at the level of the nucleotides by zooming in; alternatively zooming out allows visualization of the entire chromosome. Different types of data are displayed as horizontal tracks that are aligned with the sequence. The tracks depict known and predicted genes and other chromosomal features (centromeres, telomeres, transposons). Many types of genome-wide data have been incorporated as tracks; these include results from studies on gene expression and regulation, recombination hot spots, sites of transcription factor binding, histone modification, DNase I hypersensitivity sites and polymerase occupancy. Each track can be turned on or off individually for your desired display. SGD regularly adds new tracks as new data is published.

These tutorials demonstrate the basic navigation of GBrowse and how to view and download some of the many types of data available in the GBrowse tracks.
