While there is a wealth of funding available across campus to support undergraduate summer fellowships, students struggle to find adequate financial support for internship placements during the academic year. That need, combined with the Handa Center’s fervent belief that promoting and protecting human rights is equally critical in the international and domestic contexts, has prompted us to launch the new “Close to Home” Stipend. This program aims to to support undergraduate and graduate students with small stipends (up to $500 per quarter) to offset costs associated with internship opportunities in the Bay Area during the academic year.
For example, stipends can support transportation costs to the internship site or materials costs associated with a student’s particular project.
Stipends of up to $500 per quarter will be available on a competitive basis. Allocations will be considered based both on the relevance of the applicant’s internship to the Handa Center’s mission, as well as their financial need.
Students must work a minimum of eight hours per week. Stipends may only be used to support placements local to the San Francisco Bay Area.
