Connect from off campus

Our license agreements for many electronic resources restrict off-campus access to current Stanford faculty, staff, students, and approved affiliates only. When you're off campus, your web browser must be configured to use Stanford's authenticated proxy server so that you will be recognized as a licensed user.

Windows - Chrome

Configuring Google Chrome on Windows for off-campus access

  1. Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Show advanced settings... at the bottom of the screen.
  4. In the Network section click Change proxy settings.
  5. Click the Connections tab.
  6. For DSL or Cable Modem Internet connections – Click on LAN Settings.
For Dial-up Internet Connections – Select Add, then click on Dial-up.
  7. Select the Use automatic configuration script checkbox.
  8. Enter this URL in the Address box.  (This URL must be copied exactly with no spaces):
    http://pac.stanford.edu/suproxy.pac
  9. Uncheck all other checkboxes in this window.
  10. Click OK, click Apply, then close all configuration windows

How to reset your configuration

You may want to reset your configuration if you leave Stanford or if you primarily access e-resources while you are on campus. Using the proxy configuration while on campus may cause extra SUNet ID and password requsts. If you would prefer to avoid this, revert your browser settings as follows:

  1. Return to the Automatic Configuration window as described above.
  2. Uncheck the Use Automatic Configuration Script checkbox.
  3. Click OK, click Apply, then close all configuration windows.
