What is the difference between the Stanford Alumni Association (SAA) and the Stanford Medicine Alumni Association (SMAA)?
The Stanford Medicine Alumni Association (SMAA) is a separate organization from the Stanford Alumni Association (SAA).
All degree recipients from the School of Medicine are automatically members of SMAA. If you were a postdoc, resident, intern, or medical fellow at Stanford, you are also automatically a member of SMAA.
SAA recognizes all Stanford University degree recipients as alumni, and offers basic services to this group. In addition, you may join SAA as an annual or lifetime member to receive additional benefits (fees required). For more information on membership, please visit the Stanford Alumni Association Membership website.
If you have completed a minimum of three academic quarters as a matriculated, degree-seeking student in a degree-granting program, you are a member of both Alumni Associations.
As a member of SMAA, you receive:
- Access to the School of Medicine Alumni Directory
- A Stanford email account, at no charge to you from the Stanford Alumni Association. To obtain your email account, please see instructions here. Stanford Medicine certificate holders (interns, residents, medical fellows, and postdocs) are not eligible for an email address through SAA.
- Invitations to Stanford Medicine Alumni Day and SMAA/SAA events in your area
- Services in career and professional development
- Access to a myriad of opportunities in continuing education and travel
- Stanford Medicine Magazine

I receive too much/not enough mail from Stanford. How do I change my mailing preferences?
We can tailor what kind of mail you receive from Stanford according to your personal preferences. Do you only want to hear from Stanford Medicine, or do you want to get on a mailing list you're not currently on? Perhaps you do not want to receive paper mailings or phone calls, but emails are okay? Contact us and let us know how you'd prefer to hear from Stanford.
I don't want to be part of the online directory. How do I change my privacy settings?
To opt out of being listed in the online directory, you'll need to log in here with your username and password. Once you have logged into your profile, click on Privacy Settings. You will have the option to hide all information except for your name and year of graduation.
I want to get in touch with a fellow alumnus/a. How do I get his/her contact information?
The best way to find a fellow alumnus/a is through a search of our online directory. To create a username and password, you'll need your Stanford University Identification Number (SUID) or your degree, birthdate, and major. If you do not have your SUID, it may take up to five business days to verify your information before you can receive full access privileges.
