SPRC, one of the largest photonics programs in the US, brings together a faculty of 30 core photonics professors and approximately 150 graduate students and postdoctoral research associates in the Schools of Engineering, Humanities & Sciences, and Medicine. Photonics research at Stanford University is strongly interdisciplinary and includes the fields of lasers, optics, microscopy, quantum information and cryptography, neuroscience, solar cells, ophthalmology and telecommunications, to name just a few.
Much of the photonics research at Stanford takes place in the Ginzton Laboratory - an independent research laboratory not affiliated with any one particular department. Ginzton Lab provides an environment where students and faculty from physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and other scientific fields can engage in research activities that range across the broad definition of photonics - from basic physical work on lasers and ultrashort light pulses to quantum computing to photonic nanostructures.
Stanford's Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) assists Stanford faculty and researchers in bringing new photonics technologies to market. Photonics inventions are among the top royalty producers in OTL's portfolio
SPRC is not an academic (degree-granting) department, and as such, we do not admit students to study at Stanford. Students wishing to pursue study or research in photonics-related fields at Stanford University should apply for admission to a specific academic department.
