Each person who handles protected health information (PHI) must be aware of their obligations under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules. Stanford University has developed an online general HIPAA training, entitled "Protected Patient Privacy...One Patient at a Time," which every member of the Stanford workforce who comes into contact with PHI is required to complete periodically.
Individuals who work with human subjects in research must complete an additional on-line training module, entitled "Privacy for Clinical Researchers," which includes specific information about privacy and research.
In addition, HIPAA training on local practices and procedures is provided at the department level. Talk to your manager about specific training requirements and opportunities related to your job functions.
