Notarized transcript, degree certification, or diploma

For a notarized transcript, degree certification, or diploma, submit:

  • Request for Certification of Documents form (pdf)

  • Clean copy of your original diploma (if requesting notarized diploma). The Office of the University Registrar does not keep copies of diplomas.

  • Recommended: A pre-addressed, postage paid express mail envelope. Otherwise, all requests are returned via USPS 1st Class, a non-trackable mailing service.

Apostille

Certain governments or institutions require that an apostille be affixed to a notarized document. Stanford University does not provide or issue apostille.

In general, an apostille involves the following steps:

  1. Stanford attaches a notarized letter authenticating the transcript, degree certification, or diploma, and forwards this directly to the student, or his/her agent.
  2. The student, or his/her agent, then submits the notarized document directly to the California Secretary of State to have a state-level apostille affixed.
  3. If all forwarding materials are provided we can forward the notarized document to the Secretary of State to obtain a apostille for you.

The California Secretary of State has an authentications web site , that can further explain their process for obtaining an apostille with your notarized Stanford University documents, and related costs they charge.

Because this can be difficult to achieve remotely (i.e., from out-of-state or country), some people hire private agencies or have a stateside contact to carry out step 2 above. The University is unable to maintain a list of these agencies.
