Coterm Tuition Assessment

Undergraduate Tuition Group

  • Coterm students normally remain in the undergraduate student group until the completion of 12 undergraduate quarters.

    • 15 transfer units (excluding AP or other test credit) equal one Stanford quarter.

    • 15 units of Stanford summer quarter enrollment equal one Stanford quarter.

    • A combined total of 15 units of transfer credit and/or summer quarter units in summer quarter equals one Stanford quarter.

  • Coterm students in the undergraduate tuition group are assessed the undergraduate tuition rate, and are subject to the 20-unit maximum enrollment per quarter.  Students enrolled in over 20 units are subject to an enrollment hold effective the following quarter.

  • Coterm students in the undergraduate tuition group who have fewer than 12 quarters at Stanford but who want to enroll at the 8, 9, 10 unit graduate tuition rate may request to be moved to the graduate tuition group under the following conditions:

    • Students admitted Autumn 2015-16 and later: They must have completed at least 180 undergraduate units, which includes transfer credit, AP and other external test credit.

    • Students admitted Summer 2014-15 and prior: They must have completed at least 180 undergraduate units, which includes transfer credit but not AP or other external test credit.

    • Coterm students should submit a HelpSU ticket to request to be moved to the graduate tuition group

    • Once coterm students have been moved to the graduate tuition group, they may not move back to the undergraduate tuition group.

    • Once coterm students have their undergraduate degree(s) conferred, they are consequently moved to the graduate tuition group.

    • Tuition and Fee information is available on the Office of the University Registrar web site.

Graduate Tuition Group

  • Coterminal students are moved from the undergraduate to the graduate tuition group in their 13th quarter, or in the 16th quarter for coterm students completing two undergraduate degrees.

  • Coterminal students in the graduate tuition group are then assessed either the regular graduate tuition rate or the graduate Engineering tuition rate, and are subject to the 24-unit maximum enrollment per quarter.  Students enrolled in over 24 units are subject to an enrollment hold effective the following quarter.

  • Once coterm students have been moved to the graduate tuition group, they may not move back to the undergraduate tuition group.

  • Coterminal students are not eligible for reduced graduate tuition rates below 8 units prior to conferral of the undergraduate degree.

  • Students in the graduate coterminal student group are assessed additional graduate or Engineering tuition on a per-unit basis beginning with the 19th unit.

  • Tuition and Fee information is available on the Office of the University Registrar web site.

Coterm Students with Research or Teaching Assistantships

Coterm students who receive Research Assistant (RA) or Teaching Assistant (TA) appointments from a department prior to their 13th quarter (or 16th quarter for coterm students completing two undergraduate degrees) are moved to the graduate tuition group and assessed the applicable graduate tuition rate for the quarter in which they hold the assistantship.

  • Coterm students must have completed 180 undergraduate units (or 225 units for coterm students completing two undergraduate degrees) to be eligible for research or teaching assistantships. Advanced placement and transfer units may be used towards the 180 units (or 225 for students completing two undergraduate degrees), subject to university policies regarding the acceptance of external credit.

  • Students holding a 20-hour (50%) teaching or research assistantship may not enroll in more than 10 total units.

  • Coterm students or their departments must notify the Student Services Center through a HelpSU ticket to change to the graduate tuition group.

  • Once students have been moved to the graduate tuition group, they may not move back to the undergraduate tuition group even if they no longer hold an assistantship appointment.

  • See Administrative Guide Memo 10.2.1, Graduate Student Assistantships and GAP 7.3, Assistantships, for detailed discussion of assistantship policy.
