Liaisons and Consultants Programs

A CTL consultant shares some tips.

VPTL Liaisons

VPTL Liaisons foster two-way communication between VPTL and their home departments by promoting VPTL programs and resources, working with VPTL to customize teaching services, and supporting an energetic exchange of ideas. All departments that support, train, and/or use teaching assistants are strongly encouraged to have a VPTL liaison, and others may propose to have one also.

Student Liaisons receive a modest financial award for their service. Nominations for the liaison position come from the individual department, so contact your department chair or faculty/staff TA coordinator if you are interested in being considered for this role.

VPTL Consultants

VPTL Consultants are highly experienced TAs selected on the basis of outstanding teaching evaluations and interpersonal skills. After training, these graduate students provide peers with such VPTL services as one-on-one teaching consultation, mid-quarter student evaluations, and classroom observation/analysis.  They may also codevelop and offer workshops.

Along with a modest financial award, consultants receive training in effective mentoring strategies. If you are interested in applying to be a consultant for the next academic year, read more at Become a VPTL Consultant.

Liaisons and consultants are a valuable resource for all graduate student TAs. Be sure to find out who your VPTL representative is and use his or her expertise.

Being a VPTL Consultant can lead to great things! Previous Consultant Sean Decatur (biophysical chemistry Ph.D, 1995) became the president of Kenyon College. Dennis Sun, Ph.D. '14, won a Gores Award for excellence in teaching.
