For Undergraduates

Mechanical engineering undergraduate students

The goal of the undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering is to provide students with a balance of intellectual and practical experiences that enable them to address a variety of societal needs. Prospective students, find information for applying in the admissions area.

Current students can find policy information, forms and referrals to other on-campus resources on the student intranet site

The Mechanical Engineering program is designed to provide students with a wide range of options within the field of mechanical engineering. The discipline is very broad, encompassing elements of these areas:

  • energy science and technology
  • propulsion
  • sensing and control
  • nano- and micro-mechanics
  • design mechatronics
  • computational simulation
  • solid and fluid dynamics
  • micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)
  • biomechanical engineering

Undergraduate advising

Students interested in declaring ME as their major must have an advisor assigned to them. Students may choose their own advisor if they have already built a relationship with an ME faculty member. Alternatively, the Student Services Office can assign an advisor upon request. Prospective ME majors may also consult with the ME Peer Advisor by e-mailing mepeeradvisor@lists.stanford.edu. Simple questions may be answered via e-mail or you can schedule an appointment for a meeting.

Research Experience for Undergraduates

Engaging in independent research under the direction of a faculty member can be one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of your undergraduate career.  Explore our research opportunities for undergraduates.

Coterm program

Stanford undergraduates can apply to study for a master’s degree and complete their bachelor’s degree in parallel. ME and all other engineering graduate programs offer coterminal study in their MS programs — an option chosen by about 40 percent of the school’s undergraduates, according to recent data. Most engineering coterminal (commonly known as “coterm”) students earn both degrees within five years, and nearly all do so within six years.

Additional information about coterm requirements and applications is available from the Stanford Bulletin.
