Travel with Laptops and Other Digital Storage Devices

Stanford University faculty, students and staff engaged in research and travelling abroad temporarily with Stanford-owned laptops, smartphones or other digital storage devices must document their export compliance by reviewing, and submitting when applicable, Stanford's Annual TMP ("Temporary Exports") Certification.

Travel with Materials, Prototypes, Equipment, and Components

Stanford personnel travelling outside the U.S. and shipping / handcarrying Stanford or 3rd-party-owned property must use the Stanford Export Controls Decision Tree or contact the University Export Control Officer for guidance before travel.

Travel to Countries Identified as "State Sponsors of Terrorism"


Stanford Policy

Any plans to travel on behalf of Stanford University to the countries listed below must be reviewed and approved by the University Export Control Officer in advance of travel:

  • Cuba
  • Iran
  • North Korea
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Crimea (Region of Ukraine – Not SST but under Comprehensive Embargo)

Travel Reimbursment Requirements

Upon pre-approval for travel to these countries, Stanford's export control officer will issue an email to the traveller prior to departure. The traveller must submit the dated pre-departure approval email as a required document for travel expense reimbursement. Stanford will not reimburse travellers to these countries without the Export Control Officer's written pre-approval.
