The Office of Alcohol Policy and Education is committed to promoting responsible, safe, and fun student lifestyles for drinkers and non-drinkers alike. Engage with us via individual consultation, education workshops, seminars, academic coursework and volunteer opportunities related to alcohol and other substance abuse. We also plan and produce fun social events that de-emphasize alcohol on the weekends by way of the Cardinal Nights program.
5-SURE on Foot - Sober Monitor Program
Sober Monitors provide a documented and proven solution toward shifting the culture around college drinking. With student input and administrative support, our team keeps an eye out for potentially dangerous situations happening outside during party nights. The student staff alters the trajectory of a potentially intoxicated student’s night, preventing a relatively small problem from becoming a dangerous situation. Also, if you're feeling unsafe walking back to your dorm on a weekend night, our team will gladly walk you home.
Each year, alcohol use on American campuses results in 2,000 student deaths, 700,000 physical assaults, 100,000 reported sexual assaults, and over 100,000 arrests. At Stanford reckless drinking with hard liquor in the form of shots has been on the rise. Similar programs at our peer institutions have been proven to be a protective factor in preventing many of these very serious events from occurring. Our team puts this in to practice sitting right outside of campus parties throughout the year. Check out their table on your way to the next party!

Communications & Outreach
The outreach initiatives of the Office of Alcohol Policy and Education will focus on addressing the campus culture of alcohol consumption through social awareness projects. Through outreach initiatives, the intern will function to promote strategies for positive behavior around the use of alcohol incorporating social media and targeted social norming efforts. The intern will also respond to general student concerns and input.
Responsibilities:
- Interns will maintain a schedule of 3-6 hours/week devoting their time to communication with the student body and outreach initiatives.
- Interns are responsible for designing/utilizing fliers, outreach materials, and social media to reach out to the student body regarding events and programs of this office.
- Interns creatively address different student populations and respond appropriately to feedback from students and members of the of this office.
- Interns meet with coordinator on a weekly basis to discuss progress and direction.
Education & Programming
The programming initiatives of the Office of Alcohol Policy and Education will focus on addressing the campus culture of alcohol consumption, promoting strategies for positive behavior around the use of alcohol, and responding to student concerns and input. The primary means of achieving this initiative will be through dorm and community outreach talks presented to our diverse student populations.
Responsibilities:
- Interns will maintain a schedule of 3-6 hours/week devoting their time to programming initiatives.
- Interns are responsible for presenting outreach talks, creatively addressing different student populations, and responding appropriately to dorm feedback.
- Interns will work closely with Student Sober Monitors.
- Interns meet with coordinator on a weekly basis to discuss progress and direction.
Quality Improvement
The assessment program under the Office of Alcohol Policy and Education will serve to investigate the nature of alcohol consumption on the Stanford campus with the ultimate goal of identifying effective intervention and education strategies to promote positive behavior around the use of alcohol. The research focus will pertain, but is not limited, to the following: the role of alcohol in campus culture, drinking behavior and effective interventions for students who recently turn 21, and “Pre-gaming” & related activities.
Responsibilities:
- Interns realize quality improvement goals and project initiatives throughout a work schedule of 3-6 hours/week.
- Interns conduct literature reviews of current trends associated with college alcohol use and best practices associated with intervening in high-risk drinking situations.
- Interns develop research projects and intervention prototypes to pilot on campus with the goal of reducing high risk drinking on campus.
- Upon completion of project, interns present findings/conclusions to colleagues.
- Interns meet with coordinator on a weekly basis to discuss progress and direction.
Alternative Programming
The alternative programming initiatives of the Office of Alcohol Policy and Education will focus on creating and developing alcohol-free undergraduate events that regularly occur on Friday/Saturday nights (Cardinal Nights program). The intern will assist in organizing these events which provide alternatives to a night of drinking, emphasizing positive behavior around use of alcohol, and redefining social norms of undergraduate events. The intern will also respond to general student concerns and input.
Responsibilities:
- Interns will maintain a schedule of 20 hours/week to provide additional logistical support to the Assistant Director and Community Engagement Coordinator with regards to the Cardinal Nights program.
- Interns are responsible for collecting and organizing information for event follow-through.
- Interns creatively engage with the student body by writing, editing, and designing fliers, websites, materials, and social media.
- Interns are liaisons with undergraduate students and affiliated student groups (ASSU, Frosh Council, etc.) to provide an active voice in the Cardinal Nights selection process.
- Interns meet with Assistant Director/Community Engagement Coordinator on a weekly basis to discuss progress and direction.
