Labor Relations & Collective Bargaining

Labor Relations & Collective Bargaining at Stanford is a partnership with two labor unions that represent over 1,000 staff employees.

Stanford University is proud of its ongoing commitment and working relationships with its two labor unions: SEIU Local 2007 Higher Education Workers and the Stanford Deputy Sheriffs’ Association. We work collaboratively and with mutual respects with both organizations in the areas of the university where employees have elected to have union representation.

SEIU Local 2007 Higher Education Workers

The bargaining unit was established in the early 1970s as United Stanford Workers, which later became affiliated with SEIU. The workers represented by this collective bargaining agreement include: all regular staff maintenance employees, laboratory support personnel, custodians, food service employees, audiovisual operators, nonexempt computer operations personnel, production control clerks and tape librarians employed by the Department of Stanford Data Center and the SLAC Computing Services (SDC and SCS), book preservers and all regular staff book warehouse assistants and proofreaders of the Stanford University Press all employed by the University in Northern California. An agreement is in place through August 31, 2019.

Typical Questions About Union Jobs

The collective bargaining agreement specifically indicates which positions are covered. Typically this information is also included in an employee’s offer letter. If you have questions about whether your position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement, refer to the contract, contact your immediate supervisor, or speak with your area's Human Resources representative.

These fees are established by the union. Stanford University does not establish these fees.

The University and the union are required to meet and negotiate in good faith over wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment covered by the collective bargaining agreement.

Each union has elected officers and stewards. Any questions specific to the union may directed to the officers and stewards.
