As is set forth in Section VII of the Student Title IX Policy, parties going through the process are entitled to 9 hours of attorney service paid for by the university.

Mike Armstrong has specialized in criminal defense on the Peninsula for over 30 years, representing individuals being investigated for and accused of criminal activity. Mike takes great pride in representing each client to the best of his ability. Every case is different and every client is unique. Mike has experience in almost every kind of criminal prosecution and investigation, both at state and federal levels. Mike has significant experience representing local college and high school students both in criminal and juvenile cases and in school disciplinary hearings. Mike is looking forward to participating in Stanford’s Title IX process on behalf of Respondents. 

David Avila

David is a criminal defense lawyer with 20 years of experience.  He has represented thousands of minors and adults in delinquency, criminal and school discipline cases involving nearly every offense listed in the CA Penal Code, Welfare & Institutions Code and Education Code, including all types of theft and drug offenses, DUI’s, commercial and residential burglary, auto theft, robbery, carjacking, assault, all classes of sex offenses, attempted homicide and homicide. He has also represented numerous sexual assault victims in CA WIC Sec. 300 dependency cases over the past decade.  David is excited to participate in Stanford’s Student Title IX Process, both on behalf of complainants and respondents.

Diane de Seve

Diane de Seve has been practicing criminal defense for over 20 years. She initially started practicing in New York City, but has been practicing in the Palo Alto area for over 15 years.  She has represented many individuals accused of sex crimes, including sexual assault and other acts of sexual misconduct. Diane has represented Stanford students during various disciplinary proceedings, including sexual assault matters.  She understands the gravity of what each student - Complainant and Respondent - is going through. She looks forward to helping and advising both Complainants and Respondents through the Student Title IX Process.   

Mark Hejinian

Mark Hejinian is an associate with the law firm of Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass LLP, in San Francisco. His practice focuses on commercial litigation matters and white collar criminal investigations. Mark counsels clients in various industries, including telecom, pharmaceutical, and insurance. He has also represented students in high-stakes school disciplinary proceedings. Mark looks forward to advising responding students in navigating their way through Stanford’s Title IX Process.

Crystal Riggins

Crystal Riggins is a skilled litigator and trial attorney.  Crystal has significant experience representing student-parties, particularly complainants, in the Title IX process.  Crystal combines her advocacy skills with empathetic counseling to assist student-parties through the process.  She also draws from her experience representing complainants in sexual assault lawsuits, including a plaintiff in a nationally publicized ten-week jury trial against thirteen defendants.  Crystal is committed to providing excellent client service and is always available to communicate with her clients. 

Naomi Rustomjee

Naomi Rustomjee is a partner at the law firm of Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass LLP, in San Francisco.  Her litigation practice focuses on business and commercial, labor and employment, and property and land-use disputes.  She has also represented students and faculty in high-stakes school disciplinary proceedings.  Naomi looks forward to advising Responding Students in how to navigate through the university’s Title IX Process.
