Headstrong: 52 Women Who Changed Science — and the World

How many women scientists and engineers can you name?

Though women have been leaders in science for centuries, they are not always recognized in through our historical records and schoolbooks, or in our popular culture.

Seeking to change that awareness, journalist Rachel Swaby recently published a new book, Headstrong: 52 Women Who Changed Science — and the World.

WISE Research Roundtables offer opportunities to hear from and engage with research scientists whose work illuminates ways to advance equity in scientific and technical fields.

Conversation with Faculty Fellow Rodolfo Dirzo

This lunch will begin with a description of a project Dr. Dirzo works on in collaboration with the Redwood Environmental Academy and Leadership (REAL) program. REAL focuses on teaching high school students academic and leadership skills through hands on service projects related to the environment. This Community Engaged Learning program connects Stanford students with opportunities to learn by doing ecology education with local high school students at places like Jasper Ridge and Hidden Villa in order to participate in projects that help the community and the environment. 

Procrastination: a workshop for graduate students

Procrastination can feel like a major hurdle to overcome throughout your graduate and professional career. You are not alone! Procrastination is a vicious cycle that we all suffer from time to time.
 
In this workshop we will discuss: why we procrastinate, what it really means when we do, and how our brains are involved. We’ll also cover effective ways to restructure your life and schedule to minimize procrastination and increase motivation.

Seeing is Believing: A Workshop on Visualizations for Teaching in the Humanities, Sciences, and Engineering

Guest lecuturers: Rachel Egger, George Philip LeBourdais, and Kai Zang.

This workshop will focus on effective use of visual aids such as PowerPoint slides, whiteboard use, and other materials in a variety of classroom formats. Participants will be coached on general principles of good visual aids and then apply those principles to improve provided examples.
