Students at Activist Story Slam

The Haas Center offers signature workshops each quarter for Stanford students to develop knowledge and insight on key public service concepts. Advanced registration is recommended.

Winter 2016

Pathways of Public Service

  • Wednesday, January 6 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the DK Room (first floor); lunch provided

How can you make social impact in the world as a college student or young professional? In this introductory workshop, students explore the Haas Center’s Pathways of Public Service: direct service, community-engaged scholarship, activism, philanthropy, policy and politics, and social entrepreneurship. They consider how to leverage their personal interests and natural abilities and develop the skills to create change across sectors – at Stanford and after graduation.

Creating and Sustaining Community Partnerships

  • Monday, January 11 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the DK Room (first floor); lunch provided

This workshop prepares students to approach community organizations about potential new partnerships and explores strategies for enhancing established relationships. Participants learn how to develop a partnership agreement - a tool for ensuring clear communication - and will leave with actionable insight on how to form transformational rather than exploitative relationships.

Engaging in Ethical and Effective Service

  • Friday, January 15 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the DK Room (first floor); lunch provided

Working with a community organization can be a rich learning opportunity, but how can you as a student ensure that you contribute in a meaningful way to the organization’s mission? In this workshop, participants will discuss the the Haas Center's Principles of Ethical and Effective Service and gain insight on how to prepare for service work, communicate with community organizations, and connect their experiences with larger political, economic, and social contexts.

Putting Your Skills and Passion into Action

  • Thursday, January 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the DK Room (first floor); dinner provided

This is an interactive workshop that helps students to discover where their head and heart intersect -- that is, how they can use their strengths to work on the issues that matter to them most. We will also discuss the importance of storytelling, and students will begin to craft narratives and pitches that will aid them in pursuing opportunities in public service.

Self-Care and Public Service

  • Wednesday, February 10 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. in the DK Room (first floor); snacks provided

Working towards the public good can be taxing, and often people who do the most the most forget to take care of themselves. However, self-care helps volunteers, activists, and other mission-driven folk do better work and make bigger impact. In this workshop, you'll walk away with a practical self-care plan to help you prevent burnout and achieve more balance in your life.

Identity, Intersectionality, and Service

  • Tuesday, February 23 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Branner Lounge; snacks provided.

Join us for a discussion on what service means to our communities and how who we are affects how we serve.
