Community Service Work-Study (CSWS)

Students at Common Good
Amanda Martinez, '14

The Community Service Work-Study (CSWS) Program provides an opportunity for students to develop and participate in a significant service experience while earning a portion of their financial aid award.

This program is available during the academic year and the summer. It provides the freedom for eligible students to design a service experience in collaboration with a partnering organization. Placements during the academic year are typically on campus and in the local community while summer placements can be at qualified organizations anywhere in the United States.

Currently enrolled undergraduate students who have a financial aid package may qualify for CSWS, with the following exceptions:

  • international students
  • seniors who are graduating from Stanford are not eligible the summer after their senior year

All students must submit an authorization form to verify their work-study eligibility with the Financial Aid Office.

CSWS is a federally-supported program, co-administered for Stanford by the Haas Center and the Financial Aid Office, allowing students to undertake public service work in the community. The goal of this program is to provide students with a meaningful service and learning experience relevant to their interests while supporting and enhancing the work of nonprofit and governmental organizations.

CSWS Goals

  • Provide students a hands-on learning experience outside of the classroom.
  • Help students develop professional skills.
  • Encourage students to explore and enhance academic and career opportunities at Stanford and beyond.
  • Provide additional capacity and expansion for nonprofit/government agencies.
  • Encourage a positive, reciprocal relationship between organizations and students.
