Seven Career Resources for IR Undergraduates 

  1. BEAM, Stanford Career Education (formerly known as CDC) resources for International Careers: There is an International Service Opportunities Fair, co-sponsored by BEAM and the Haas Center in January every year. Subscribe to BEAM e-newsletter on International Careers to be reminded of this event and other-related ones on campus. Research other careers besides international, such as public service/ govt/ education, environment, business, arts/ media/ communication. Don't forget to check other available career resources for Alumni, such as CareerConnect
     
  2. Get career advice and explore the world of work by finding a Stanford alumni mentor via the Stanford Alumni Mentoring Program organized by BEAM, and access the directory of over 200,000 alumni via Handshake for informational interviews.  BEAM offers workshops and 1:1 coaching on how to conduct informational interviews.
     
  3. Locate job/ internship opportunities via BEAM Jobs and Internships Databases found on the BEAM website.  To access these databases, you will need to first register with the CDC.
     
  4. Meet with a career counselor for either a 15 or 45 minute appointment to discuss job/internship search strategies, cover letter and resume writing, interview preparation, networking, clarify goals/ interests/ skills/ values, and access a multitude of on-line and print resources available in the BEAM library. You will need to first register with BEAM before scheduling an appointment.   5. Unsure of where to start or what you want to do?  You can also check out the T.R.E.E, an interactive, on-line tool that will help you understand what you might be looking for in a major or job.

Stanford Global Studies Internship Opportunities

Stanford in Washington (SIW): Autumn, Winter, Spring

BING Stanford in Washington (SIW) Internships.  All students at BSIW are placed in a full-time internship in the Washington, DC metropolitan area through the combined efforts of the student and the Stanford in Washington staff and faculty.  Visit the SIW website for application deadlines and procedures. 

 

Other Internships/ Fellowships

Latin American Studies Monica Miller Walsh Undergraduate Summer Internship grants.  These awards are available to Stanford undergraduate students interested in completing an independent internship in Latin America.  Application deadline is generally in March for the following summer.

 

Undergraduate Human Rights Fellowships.  Offered to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors, grants will be given to four undergraduates who commit to working on human rights issues fulltime for a minimum of 8 weeks.  

 

Stanford in Government (SIG) Fellowships. SIG offers dozens of fully-funded public service internships every summer in a range of organizations around the world. Undergraduates from all majors and years are encouraged to apply as the fellowships represent public service through a variety of disciplines. (NOTE: only seniors planning to return to campus the next fall, for instance co-terms, are eligible). 

 

Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) Fellowships/ Internships.
In 2016, CDDRL will be supporting 10 U.S.-based and international fellowships in partnership with a number institutions on campus, including the Haas Center for Public Service, the Program on Social Entrepreneurship, the Freeman Spogli Institute, and Stanford in Government. These fellowships are aimed at Stanford undergraduates and graduating seniors/coterms interested in working in NGOs and civil society organizations dedicated to service, international development, good governance, and/or human rights.
