New Student Orientation Volunteer Application
Did you love your New Student Orientation experience? Then join the NSO team in welcoming the Class of 2020 and transfers in their first days as new Stanford students! We need your help as Orientation Volunteers (OVs) to make NSO 2016 as vibrant, energetic, and memorable as it was during your first days as new students on The Farm. Not only will you get to welcome our freshmen and transfers on Opening Day, but as an OV you get to take part in the traditions and major events which make NSO special. As an added bonus, OVs get to move in early!
The OV Application will open in Spring Quarter.

Position Descriptions
Head Orientation Volunteers (HOVs)
HOVs work together as a team to prepare for the OVs’ arrival and to finalize preparations before NSO. When the OVs arrive, HOVs lead a team of 6 - 10 OVs to assist with NSO event implementation. HOV candidates must have strong leadership and interpersonal skills and a willingness to work hard and have fun. The commitment for HOVs begins on Tuesday, September 13, and runs through the end of NSO, Sunday, September 25. HOVs cannot participate in any programs or jobs that have activities occurring during these dates (Residence Staff, Sophomore College, Junior Leadership Intensive, Arts Intensive, Bing Honors College, SPOT Leaders, etc.). HOV interviews will be conducted the week of May 9, 2016.
Orientation Volunteers (OVs)
OVs play a critical role in welcoming new students by assisting with a wide range of NSO projects and events. OV responsibilities may include projects such as creating new students’ check-in packets, cheering for students as they arrive on campus, providing directions to new students and families, moving new students into their residences, and setting up tables and chairs for NSO events. OVs work in teams of 6 - 10 upperclassmen under the supervision of a Head OV. The commitment for OVs begins on Saturday morning, September 17, and runs through the end of NSO, Sunday, September 25. OV candidates must be prepared to engage a wide array of responsibilities, with both front-line and behind-the-scenes roles, with great enthusiasm and a positive work ethic. OVs are the backbone of NSO, and we’ll be sure you have a great time. OVs cannot participate in any programs or jobs that have activities occurring during these dates (Residence Staff, Sophomore College, Junior Leadership Program, Arts Intensive, Bing Honors College, SPOT Leaders, etc.).
Community Orientation Volunteers (COVs)
COVs aid and assist the Community Coordinators assigned to each of the community programs/centers in the implementation of all community events. COVs work closely, as a team of three to four individuals, with their CCs. COVs may also assist with some general NSO events. COV candidates should be enthusiastic about the NSO events hosted by community centers and programs and be ready to assist in the implementation of these events. The commitment for COVs begins on Saturday morning, September 17, and runs through the end of NSO, Sunday, September 25. COVs cannot participate in any programs or jobs that have activities occurring during these dates (Residence Staff, Sophomore College, Arts Intensive, Junior Leadership Intensive, Bing Honors College, SPOT Leaders, etc.).
NSO Communities include: Asian American New Student Orientation Committee (AANSOC), Black Recruitment & Orientation Committee (BROC), Chicano Latino Orientation Committee (CLOC), International Student Orientation Committee (ISOC), LGBT Community Resources Center (LGBT-CRC), Native American Orientation Committee (NAOC), First Generation Orientation Committee (FGOC), Religious Life Orientation Committee (RLOC), Transfer Students Community, and Women's Community Center (WCC).
SPOT Orientation Volunteers (SPOT OVs)
SPOT OVs assist with all aspects of the SPOT (Stanford Pre-Orientation Trips) program. Although SPOT OVs do not participate in the SPOT trips, SPOT OVs work closely with the program staff before the trips depart and when the trips return. SPOT OVs return to campus on Friday, September 9 and their commitment is completed on Wednesday, September 21. SPOT OV candidates should be excited about assisting with the SPOT program, and be ready to participate in a range of projects. Early Arrival to Campus
Undergraduate Advising and Research will provide early arrival for HOVs, OVs, and COVs into their fall residences (September 16 - 22) as well as meals (September 15 - 22) for the period before housing and dining contracts begin. HOVs will be temporarily housed in Conference Housing with meals provided for the period from September 13 - 15 before their fall residences open for early arrival housing. The Athletics Department will provide housing and meals for SPOT OVs.
HOVs, OVs, and COVs must have on-campus housing for Autumn Quarter 2016 in order to be granted early arrival into their housing assignment. If students do not have on-campus housing for Autumn, but would still like to participate as orientation volunteers, they must make their own arrangements to be housed locally.
