WHAT
Through a combination of instruction and mentoring, Creative Expression (CE) courses offer students significant opportunities to study the creative process and at the same time acquire the requisite skills to "practice" creative expression themselves.
WHY
The ability to design, to create, and to perform – each enriches our lives in substantial and meaningful ways. Thinking creatively, giving expressive shape to ideas, and communicating those ideas imaginatively, are not only indispensable to all artistic endeavors, but will enhance traditional academic pursuits, stimulate effective problem-solving, and foster originality in new areas.
HOW
You’ll find a wide variety of Creative Expression courses available – from product design and architecture, to sculpture and the graphic novel, dance and musical and dramatic performance. You might take a Creative Expression course from one of the arts departments or the program in creative writing, or undertake design work through engineering. Creative Expression courses are devoted to artistic practice, whereas you’ll find arts department courses devoted primarily to critical analysis and exegesis in Aesthetic and Interpretive Inquiry.
You’ll need to take one 2-unit course in Creative Expression (CE). You may also opt to take the same 1-unit CE certified course for two quarters (courses do not need to be taken in consecutive quarters) or you may take two different 1-unit CE certified course in the same department such as Dance, Music, or TAPS. CE courses may be taken Satisfactory/No Credit at the Instructor’s discretion. Thinking Matters, many Introductory Seminars, and some of your major requirements may also count towards your Ways coursework.
