Stanford Blood Center is seeking a Medical Assistant - Blood Bank 1 to work under periodic supervision and following standard operating procedures to determine donor suitability, including medical history and physical assessment, for blood donations and related samples; perform venipuncture; treat donor reactions. Assist with donor room preparations, prepare and distribute supplies and equipment, perform computer entry, coordinate and perform quality control procedures, and participate in record maintenance.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

• Greet and assist donors with paperwork. Identify any specific requirements for particular type of donation and determine blood donor suitability.

• Provide information within defined limits.

• Prepare equipment and donor for blood draw; perform venipuncture; collect, label, and store donation.

• Maintain complete and accurate donor files and other documentation.

• Clean and perform quality assurance checks on equipment; order, restock and maintain supplies; maintain tidy and clean work areas; ensure samples are correctly documented and ready for delivery to the lab. Consult charge nurse as appropriate.

• Develop and maintain knowledge of applicable Stanford Medical School Blood Center procedures and protocols; participate in staff meetings, in-service, and continuing education opportunities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED).

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

• Demonstrated punctuality, good attendance, and flexibility to work hours when donors are scheduled, which may include evenings and weekends.

• Ability to follow standard operating procedures and to prioritize tasks.


CERTIFICATION AND LICENSES:

• Valid California Driver's License.

• Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Constantly stand/walk.

• Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully.

• Occasionally use a computer, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21-40 pounds.

• Rarely sitting, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), use a telephone, scrub/sweep/mop/chop/mix, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.

• Drive vehicle day and night with non-commercial license.• Ability to distinguish basic colors (e.g., red, yellow, purple, green, and buff).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• May be required to work in lab, office, basement, van, crowded spaces and close quarters.

• Lighting, heating and ventilation may vary with location of blood collection site.

• Exposure to blood, body fluid or tissues and risk of exposure to contagious diseases, infections, and accidental needle sticks requiring adherence to universal precautions

• Rotating work cycle, from 5 am to 10 pm, with daily changes in schedule and location.

• Employee must comply with applicable state, federal, and AABB regulations, university and departmental policies regarding health and safety, quality assurance protocols, GMP guidelines, and HIPAA guidelines.

• When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

• Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.

• Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.

OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION:

Will be required to comply with governmental regulations and University and Blood Center policy and strictly observe privacy and security related policies, procedures and practices to preserve the integrity and confidentiality of medical and other sensitive information pertaining to donors, patients, research subjects, and staff. Will be required to enter areas where other individuals work with human blood; potential may exist for unanticipated exposure to bloodborne pathogens by splash or spill.
