In 1971, American billionaire Daniel K. Ludwig established the global Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. In 1992, upon his death, a trust was created to manage a second gift from Mr. Ludwig, the Virginia & D.K. Ludwig Fund for Cancer Research. The Trustees of the fund have now established Ludwig Centers at six distinguished US institutions: Harvard Medical School,
The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Stanford University School of Medicine and The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

The Ludwig Center for Cancer Stem Cell Research and Medicine at Stanford is located in the Lorry I. Lokey Stem Cell Research Building on the campus of Stanford University.
