Stanford Dining Hall Ambassador

Reports to General Manager of Dining Hall

Position Summary

Dining Ambassadors (DAs) help to build and promote student community in the dining halls. DAs help to create a vibrant and active student dining community for the residents by promoting wellness, healthy eating, sustainability, residential life through community building activities and educational experiences, while being part of a team proudly serving great food. DAs will promote stewardship, understand and communicate university policies, be a point of contact and promote events and activities in the dining halls. DAs are residents of their local dining community and work directly with the dining hall staff to foster respectful, two way communications.

General Responsibilities

  • Meet at least once a week with the dining hall managers to determine special events and address issues within the local dining community.

  • Consider dining hall staff needs and concerns. This involves working with the employees, student groups, and dining team.
  • Attend and assist with all-campus DA meetings and events.
  • Become knowledgeable of the overall dining community.
  • Recognize issues, develop remedies, and undertake follow-up.
  • Act to fulfill the R&DE Stanford Dining mission statement.
  • Make periodic reports about projects and initiatives.
  • Promote wellness, sustainability, student community building events.
  • Act as Stanford Dining's representative and ambassador to all constituents and stakeholders.

Flexible hours.  $15.05-$15.50/hour, DOE; flexible hours + $50 Cardinal Dollars
In order to receive Cardinal Dollars, a full quarter of work must be completed. Cardinal Dollars are added to SUNET ID cards at the beginning of the following quarter.

Stanford Hospitality Senator

Reports to General Manager of Retail Café and Stanford Hospitality and Auxiliaries Marketing Team

Position Summary

Hospitality Senators help to build and promote the Stanford community in the Stanford Hospitality and Auxiliaries (SHA) cafes. They are important to the success of Stanford Hospitality and Auxiliaries, as they will be a part of creating an unforgettable dining experience for students, faculty, staff, and campus guests in our high-quality retail cafés through our commitment to exceptional quality, sustainability, and customer satisfaction. Senators will promote stewardship, understand and communicate university policies, be a point of contact for customers, assist with marketing efforts, and promote events and activities in the retail cafes. Senators are students of the Stanford community and work directly with the café staff and customers to foster respectful, two-way communications.

  • Hospitality Senators work with many people in the Stanford community and will represent R&DE Stanford Hospitality and Auxiliaries when communicating with all of them the correct information and policies.
  • Senators will exhibit open and consistent communication between café staff, manager, customers, and fellow advocates via email and social media updates.

4. Mystery Shopper

  • Each Senator will serve as a Mystery Shopper at SHA cafés different from the one for which they serve. Shoppers will be assigned cafes and selected service components at each one.
  • Mystery Shoppers will complete assignments specifically designed for their assigned café as designated by the Stanford Hospitality and Auxiliaries Marketing Team, and report their findings at the monthly meetings.

General Responsibilities

  • Design marketing plans that promote sales and services of the SHA cafes to the Stanford community through various media.
  • Provide your café manager feedback from customers about their experience. Obtain necessary market data through surveys, communication via social media, and focus groups.
  • Maintain consistent presence on the Facebook and Twitter accounts of the designated café. Manage efforts including posting, monitoring, routing, and responding through media distribution systems such as Hoot-suite and in real time in accordance to R&DE established social media standards.
  • Devise campaigns that encourage customers to visit the Stanford Hospitality and Auxiliaries’ website and social media accounts.
  • Participate in monthly meetings to report on activities. Jointly prepare a monthly report for the Executive Director to include events, marketing initiatives, social media metrics and results compared to goals.
  • Plan and attend monthly special events at the cafés. All advocates will work in various cafes for special events.
  • Become knowledgeable of the overall Stanford community and collectively develop cross-café marketing initiatives.
  • Recognize marketing and operational challenges, suggest remedies and undertake follow-up.
  • Act to fulfill the R&DE Stanford Hospitality and Auxiliaries mission statement.
  • Promote the goals of Stanford University wellness, sustainability, and community-building events.

Arrillaga Nights Intern

Summary of Position and the Arrillaga Nights Program

Arrillaga Nights is an R&DE Stanford Dining initiative focused on adding an entertainment component to the Late Night meal program. The goal is to create a lively and festive late night gathering place, with food and live student acts, showcasing the commitment that R&DE Stanford Dining has to excellence. The goal of the intern position is to make Arrillaga Nights a place where students want to perform, as well as a place where both undergraduate and graduate students want to gather at night. The job of the Arrillaga Nights intern is to facilitate exactly that; to help plan and execute the entertainment aspect of the program, as well as coordinate with marketing.

Essential Job Functions

Managing the performance database

  • Research new student groups and performers; update the database with performer information, interest level, description of their act, contact information, etc. in order to increase efficiency and ease in the booking process in the future.

Booking

  • In charge of booking student acts for the various performance; initiating contact with student groups, follow up about possible performance dates, and cementing performance groups and schedules. Book two to three acts for a night.
  • Advertise to the student body about performance opportunities through student advertising and communication channels.

Event Implementation

  • Responsible for making sure performers have everything they need to make their performance successful (ex: drum set, extra mics, etc.).
  • IMPORTANT: Be on site for the performances on Tuesday night between 10pm and 12am for set up, performance, and take down.
  • Help maintain, update, and work the Audio Visual System. Undergo hands-on training and understand and be familiarized with the training manual.

Innovate and Brainstorm

  • Come up with new and innovate event ideas. Ex: Hosting a campus wide dance competition with judges and prizes, dorm talent competitions, open mic nights, etc., in order to provide a diverse and immersive nighttime entertainment experience, as well as draw in crowds to help with night time Arrillaga Family Dining Commons foot traffic.

Marketing

  • Working with R&DE Stanford Dining Marketing to create buzz for performances and special events; keeping the department abreast of upcoming event schedule, as well as communicating about signage and flyering as needed.
  • Word of mouth with students to market the Arrillaga Nights program; work with Dining Ambassadors to help with outreach.
  • Possibly assist with brainstorming ways to outreach to the graduate student population.

Sustainability Energy & Water Interns

R&DE Stanford Dining is committed to reducing resource consumption in our dining halls. R&E Stanford Dining is looking for one or two interns to focus on lowering energy and water consumption in the dining halls. The interns will analyze monthly energy and water data and perform audits to understand the current consumption of different appliances in the dining halls and opportunities to save. The interns will research best practices and alternative options based on the audits, analyses and interviews with key stakeholders (general managers, chefs, & other staff). Interns will also apply for rebates to fund changes. The outcome will be recommendations and implementation of a plan for infrastructure improvements to provide more efficient and effective service, as well as appropriate educational and/or behavioral programming for staff and students.

Sustainability Garden Intern

The Stanford Dining Hall Gardens are an integral part of R&DE’s Sustainable Food education and outreach program. The gardens are managed by a team of Student Garden Interns, who report to and work closely with the Sustainable Food Program Manager to grow and provide organic produce to the Stanford dining halls. The gardens also play an important role in increasing awareness and providing education about local, seasonal, and sustainably grown food. Student Garden Interns will have the opportunity to work on various projects, to learn and expand on the fundamentals of organic gardening, to meet and work with other people interested in sustainable food, and to be involved in educational and community outreach events.

Student Marketing & Production Specialist 

Reports to Assistant Director of Business Support & Assessment (BSA)

Position Summary

Student Marketing & Production Specialists are paid student positions. This position is expected to become familiar with all marketing activities conducted by BSA to be successful in this role.  Marketing Specialists work directly with the BSA team to help with events and activities designed to generate revenue, build bridges with other departments, groups and university entities, foster respectful, two-way communications, and work towards the creation of a Culture of Excellence within R&DE.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain high level of professionalism at all times and comply with appropriate dress code 
  • Assist the BSA team on production, delivery and installation of marketing materials such as fliers, signage, posters, tentcards, etc.; maintain accurate inventory levels of production supplies.
  • Support the BSA team in coordination and various liaison work and communications with retail and dining managers on specific marketing projects and promotions.
  • Assist with various marketing projects involving market research, advertising, promotions, email marketing, marketing event planning, coordination, collateral production and other revenue-generating initiatives under the direction of the BSA Assistant Director  
  • Execute merchandise and visual presentation standards to maximize sales, and provide creative feedback on various collateral as part of the BSA “brainstorming” team
  • Provide marketing administrative support: press clippings,  marketing files, mailing lists, marketing invoices
  • Assist in growing and maintaining email lists and follow up special promotions associated with these lists.
  • Assist the BSA team in all other business support needs and marketing activities within R&DE.

Qualifications

  • Must be current undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Highly motivated individual who has an interest in or is studying: Marketing, Business, Design.
  • Strong written and verbal communications (including copy editing and proofreading ability).
  • Self-motivated and charismatic.
  • Friendly, sociable and outgoing.
  • Great multi-tasker.
