The Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Clinic uniquely addresses the increased risk of melanoma in patients based on mole pattern and family history. We provide evaluation and ongoing surveillance for patients with cutaneous (skin) and more advanced melanoma as well as those with atypical nevi (moles). As part of Stanford Cancer Center, our expert doctors work together across clinics and use the latest procedures and therapies to provide the best possible preventative care and treatment.

We hold clinic in the Stanford Cancer Center at Blake Wilbur Building, 3rd floor. Additional appointments with Dr. Justin Ko are available at the Hoover Pavilion and Stanford Outpatient Medical Center Dermatology clinics.
Pigmented lesion and melanoma expertise at Stanford
Patients with an atypical mole pattern have over 50 to 100 moles with generally 5 or more showing clinical atypia (variation in color or irregular, asymmetric borders, and/or size greater than 8mm diameter). Affected individuals are estimated to have a 5-50-fold increased risk of melanoma depending on family history of melanoma.
We employ total body mole mapping through DigitalDerm™ and dermoscopic techniques to assist in the early detection of severely atypical moles and cutaneous melanoma. Most skin melanomas do not arise from a pre-existing mole, which adds to the advantage of total body photography for assessing new or changing pigmented lesions. Mole mapping is generally recommended for appropriate patients on a one-time basis, and individuals are encouraged to use the photos to assist with regular skin self-examinations. Stanford is the sole provider of Digital Derm total body mole mapping in the San Francisco Bay Area.
We are a participant in the National Cancer Institute/University of Arizona Early Phase Cancer Chemoprevention Consortium, designed to provide clinical trials to prevent melanoma and other skin cancers in high-risk individuals.

Melanoma Surgery Clinic
Stanford surgeons (dermatology, head and neck, general surgery/surgical oncology) perform surgery for all stages of melanoma. Patients with metastatic melanoma (lymph node metastasis and disseminated disease) are generally managed by Stanford melanoma oncologists, including potential entry into clinical trials open at Stanford. However, the simultaneously occurring dermatology, surgery, and oncology clinics allow for multispecialty input into the care of complex patients on an ongoing basis.
These simultaneously-run melanoma clinics promote communication among specialists to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary "tumor board" approach for melanoma patients of all disease stages. Additional medical oncology clinics for patients with advanced melanoma occur throughout the week.
