Research Training in Pediatric Nonmalignant Hematology and Stem Cell Biology
Kathleen Sakamoto is the Shelagh Galligan Professor of Pediatrics in the division of Hematology/Oncology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Sakamoto received a B.A. in Biology, cum laude from Williams College, M.D. from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the California Institute of Technology.
Dr. Sakamoto was a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Judith Gasson (Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine). She received her Ph.D. in the laboratory of Ray Deshaies, Ph.D. (Division of Biology, HHMI, Caltech).
She joined the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics, Stanford University School of Medicine in 2011 as a Professor of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. She has been the recipient of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Scholar Award, Western Society for Pediatric Research Ross Award in Research, and an American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Young Investigator Award. Dr. Sakamoto is a member of the American Pediatric Society and the Society for Pediatric Research. Her major research focus has been the molecular pathogenesis of leukemogenesis, novel therapeutics for treatment of leukemia, and targeting cancer-causing proteins for ubiquitination and degradation.
Dr. Sakamoto serves on grant review committees for the NIH, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America, Concern Foundation, New York and Maryland Stem Cell Program, and St. Balderick's Foundation.
The Stanford Nonmalignant Hematology and Stem Cell Biology Training Program is funded by the NIH/NHLBI and supports two positions per year for one year of funding with an additional year pending progress.
