Stanford ChEM-H Undergraduate Scholars Program Teaching Assistant
The Stanford ChEM-H Undergraduate Scholars Program provides interdisciplinary research experience to sophomore undergraduates in the engineering, physical science, or life science fields. Undergraduates are mentored by postdocs in host labs. Participating students enroll in a 1-unit seminar course (CHEM 113) that exposes them to interdisciplinary research questions and approaches that span chemistry, engineering, biology, and medicine. The focus is on the development and practice of scientific reading, writing, and presentation skills intended to complement hands-on laboratory research. Position Description
The Teaching Assistant will work closely with the ChEM-H Scientific Program Manager to develop curriculum for the program’s seminar in the fall and to lead the teaching and facilitation of the seminar during the winter, spring, and summer quarters. Duties may include:
- Interviewing undergraduates and mentors for the program
- Developing curriculum for the seminar
- Leading seminar activities
- Providing feedback on student assignments
- Meeting with students 1-on-1 to discuss research progress and assignments
Qualifications/Experience
- Enrolled as a Stanford PhD student in a STEM field with a research focus on human health
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Be a self-starter, independent, and proactive
- Genuine interest in science education and communication
- Prior teaching experience preferred
- Able to commit to fall, winter, spring, and summer quarters during the 2019-2020 academic year
Compensation
10% graduate student Teaching Assistantship for four quarters (fall 2019 through summer 2020).
