macOS Sierra (v10.12) at Stanford

Obtaining macOS Sierra

macOS Sierra (version 10.12) is scheduled for release on September 20, 2016. As with previous releases the software is available for download at the Mac App Store. The update to macOS Sierra is free.

Software compatibility

You are encouraged to read this section in full to make sure the software you need to use is compatible with macOS Sierra before upgrading. This section will be updated frequently, so please check back often in the first few weeks following macOS Sierra's release. Essential Stanford Software (ESS)

Stanford Desktop Tools (SDT) SDT 3.2.7 is available and is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible
Stanford Anti-Malware Stanford Anti-Malware is available on ESS and is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible
BigFix Client The latest BigFix client available on ESS is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible
Kerberos Commander Version 5.3 is available on ESS and is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible
Fetch The latest version of Fetch is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible
LelandSSH The latest version of LelandSSH is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible

See Browser Recommendations for the latest information on browser compatibility with administrative applications in use at Stanford. Java 8 is supported on macOS Sierra, but does not work with administrative applications at this time.

OpenAFS The current version is not compatible with macOS Sierra. An update is expected sometime after the macOS Sierra launch date. Not compatible
BlueJeans According to the vendor, BlueJeans is compatible with macOS Sierra and Safari 9. Compatible
Box Sync Client According to the vendor, the latest version of Box Sync 4 is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible
Cisco Jabber Jabber is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible
Stanford Medicine Box A newer version (10.2.195) of the Mac Gears client was released, so those who had been experiencing difficulties should now be able to successfully login to Stanford Medicine Box. Compatible
CrashPlan CrashPlan  appears to work with macOS Sierra. Compatible
Google Drive Sync The Google Drive sync client appears to work with macOS Sierra. Official support is still being determined. Compatible
MATLAB The latest release is not compatible with macOS Sierra. Not compatible
Microsoft Office 2016 Office 2016 for Mac is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible
Microsoft Office 2011

Not supported.

SNRT The Stanford Network Registration Tool, which is used during the Stanford Network Self-Registration process, is compatible with macOS  Sierra. Compatible
Stanford Whole Disk Encryption (SWDE) macOS Sierra is supported in SWDE through FileVault2, the native whole disk encryption feature. Compatible
VLRE VLRE is compatible with macOS Sierra. Compatible
VMWare Fusion

VMware Fusion 8 installs properly and runs VM correctly but a VM of macOS  Sierra does not work in El Capitan.
