Welcome to Stanford
Welcome! Approaching Stanford is the process that will guide all new undergraduate students in your transition to Stanford. This website, along with the Approaching Stanford Handbook and weekly summer communications to your @stanford.edu email account (webmail.stanford.edu), will provide the necessary information you need to prepare for your first year on the Farm. Be sure to read the time-sensitive materials and complete your required Approaching Stanford Forms online.
Approaching Stanford
In preparation for your arrival, Stanford will send you frequent communications by email (webmail.stanford.edu) and postal mail from May 15 to September. Put these important dates and deadlines on your calendar and be sure to complete any required actions, if applicable to you. First-Years: Your first email and mailing was sent on May 15, 2017. Transfers: Your first email and mailing was sent on June 12, 2017.
As Move-In Day draws closer, you will be planning what to pack and preparing for your move to Stanford. New Student Orientation (NSO) 2017 will be held from Tuesday, September 19 (Move-In Day), to Sunday, September 24, 2017, the day before Autumn Quarter classes begin. All new students must be checked in at their residence by 5:00 p.m. on September 19. NSO is required for all new students. [Information on these pages will be updated in the summer.]
Professor Noah Diffenbaugh is the 2017 faculty moderator for the Three Books program, a cherished Stanford NSO tradition. This year's selections are based on the theme of sustainability and equity: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert, and Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward. Students will receive the books in the Approaching Stanford mailed materials and have an opportunity to join discussions on Canvas as well as in person with faculty and the authors during NSO. The Three Books program with the authors will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2017.
