BIO 07 — Longing for Longevity: From Biology to Biohacking

April 22, 2021|7:00pm

Everyone wants to live longer, but nobody wants to get old. So what if we could not only add years to life but also life to years? This is no science fiction, it’s geroscience. In this course, we will see how the booming field of aging biology is redefining what it means to grow old. We will describe the main theories around aging, with a focus on genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, and answer questions nobody would have considered even a decade ago, including: Should we still measure our age in years or can we use molecular clocks to measure the “biological age” of our cells and tissues? Can we delay or even reverse aging through the use of lifestyle hacks, supplements, and so-called senotherapeutics? How can we disentangle hype, hope, and hurdles in geroscience? We will also hear from guest speakers who are world-renowned longevity and aging experts, including Valter Longo, Professor of Gerontology at the University of Southern California. By the end of this course, students will be able to understand, critically evaluate, and use new discoveries in geroscience to live a healthier, longer life.

Lucia Aronica, Lecturer, Stanford Genetics and Genomics Certificate Program; Genomics R&D Lead, Metagenics; Topic Editor, Life (MDPI)

Lucia Aronica’s research investigates the links among diet, genetics, and epigenetics, and their role in determining our “healthspan” and lifespan. She has published research papers in Cell, Genes & Development, and The EMBO Journal. Aronica received a PhD from the Universitat Wien.

Maddalena Adorno, Co-Founder and CEO, Dorian Therapeutics

Maddalena Adorno is the main inventor of a technology that is a potential therapeutic for rejuvenating cells and tissues. She received a PhD in biomedicine from the University of Padova, Italy, and completed her postdoctoral training at Stanford, working on stem cell and aging biology. She is on the advisory board of Kin-Keepers, a company that uses AI and tech to improve life quality for the elderly. Her work has been published in journals including Nature, Cell, and Science, and she is a named inventor on several patents in cancer biology, aging, and degenerative diseases. In 2019, she was an invited speaker at the Time 100 Health Summit to discuss the potential of new approaches targeting senescence.
