WELL 05 — Designing Your Third Third for Longevity

April 07, 2021|5:00pm

The third third of life doesn’t look the way it used to. During the 20th century, a three-stage view of life emerged: education, career, then retirement. Over the same century, life expectancy increased by thirty years, with growing numbers of people living healthy, productive lives into their eighties and nineties. How will you make the most of the “third third”—the twenty to thirty (or more) potentially vital years ahead? This interactive course will help students answer that question for themselves, by providing research-based information and resources to design their own satisfying third third. There are challenges, yet studies show this can also be the happiest time of our lives. We will explore the latest findings on longevity and best practices for aging well, while debunking myths about getting older. And we will study Stanford professor Philip Pizzo’s research on the importance of wellness, social engagement, and purpose. Students will complete assessments that focus on their specific strengths, values, and priorities in order to re-invent what aging looks like and embark on their next phase with purpose and optimism. Half of each class session will be lecture and discussion and half will be reflection and application of the concepts individually and in small groups. Each student will leave with an individualized game plan to create a fulfilling and impactful next chapter.

All students are required to purchase the online Top 5 CliftonStrengths Assessment ($19.99). More information on how to purchase and complete this assessment will be provided during the course.
