Stanford Alternative Worksites

Alternative worksites or satellite locations are Stanford owned or leased premises, outside the main campus or Stanford Redwood City campus. In addition to telecommuting and flexible work hours, these worksites are an option to support flexible work arrangements.

9/8/20 UPDATE: The Newark Hub project, the Stanford-owned alternative worksite providing a mix of reservable and drop-in spaces, has a planned opening of January 2021. Construction is moving forward in accordance with Alameda County and state guidelines.

Additional details about the facility and worksite amenities, operations and registration information and usage guidelines will be shared on this page and promoted widely in the lead-up to its opening.

As conveyed previously, the alternative worksites in Newark, San Francisco and San Jose have been decommissioned. At this time, there is no plan to lease new properties.

5/14/20 UPDATE: With the continuing developments of COVID-19 and with the health and safety of our employees in mind, the decision has been made to decommission the alternative worksites. The closure of the Stanford suites are effective as of Friday, May 15, 2020.

The Newark Hub project, however, continues to move forward and will provide a university-owned satellite worksite with a mix of reservable and drop-in spaces. More information about the Newark Hub will be shared in the coming months.

Alternative Worksites vs. Telecommuting

Below are the similarities and differences between alternative worksites and telecommuting:

Similarities differences
  • Supports workplace flexibility
  • A signed telecommute agreement is not required for alternative worksites
  • Managers set expectations regarding availability, accessibility and performance
  • Employee is limited to one day per week at an alternative worksite (due to space limitations)
  • Regular use of collaboration tools such as Jabber, Zoom, Slack and Google Drive are critical to support a virtual workplace
  • Alternative worksites provide an office environment with variety of workspace options and amenities, free of home distractions (i.e. noise, dog barking, competing priorities)
