Residences for Couples Without Children

Graduate and undergraduate students who are married or in a domestic partnership with a partner who will co-occupy an apartment with them at least 50% of each week are eligible to live in graduate couples housing. At Stanford, a domestic partnership is defined as an established, long-term romantic partnership between two people with an exclusive mutual commitment in which the partners share the necessities of life and ongoing responsibility for their mutual welfare. Undergraduates may not apply for couples housing for summer if they are currently in single student housing and are applying for single student housing for the following year.

Couples without children are assigned to studios and one-bedroom apartments. Most of the one-bedroom apartments are located in Escondido Village mid-rise buildings. There are a limited number of one-bedroom apartments in Escondido Village low rises, the GSB Residences and Munger Graduate Residence. Premium studios are located in Escondido Village Graduate Residences, Escondido Village Kennedy Graduate Residences and Munger Graduate Residence. Smaller standard studios are also an option for couples in Escondido Village, but are primarily intended to house one single student.

Two-student couples who are both enrolled, matriculated Stanford students are also eligible for a very limited number of one-bedroom plus den and two bedroom, one bath low-rise apartments in Escondido Village.

Apartments for couples without children are furnished with a queen-sized bed with the exception of the Escondido Village standard studios that are furnished with full-sized extra long beds.

In situations where both spouses/partners are Stanford students, only one student must be enrolled to maintain eligibility for housing. However, in two-bedroom and one-bedroom plus den apartments, both students must be enrolled for the contract period or approved to be in housing while on leave (students can gain approval by using Axess and filing a petition with Housing Assignments).

Off-campus Subsidized Housing Options for 2020-21

While off campus housing choices will be available to rank on the 2020-21 Lottery application, assignment to these spaces will be based on overall applicant demand and COVID-19 related requirements. Students listing these choices should also rank on-campus housing options. Given the uncertainties of the COVID-19 situation, students assigned to off-campus, subsidized housing should know that they may have to relocate to campus during the academic year due to emerging circumstances.. If students are assigned off-campus for 2020-21, they are not able to renew for 2021-22 and may not sublicense their assignment.

Click here for a chart of general information about all the apartment complexes and click on the individual complexes below for more detailed descriptions and pictures. These subsidized off-campus apartments will not be available after August 2021.

Off-Campus Housing

Rental housing is available near Stanford, but the University is located in a highly desirable suburban area in the heart of Silicon Valley. Consequently, off-campus rental rates are relatively high compared to many other regions of the United States and even other parts of the Bay Area.

If you decide to live off campus, plan to arrive at Stanford at least two weeks early to take advantage of a wider range of housing choices.

You can check local rental listings, accessible only to Stanford students and affiliates, at Student Housing’s Community Housing website. You will be directed from there to the rental listings, which are available through the Places4Students website. You will either need a Stanford email address to view the rental listings, or may contact Housing Assignments for a temporary password.
