Hewlett Award

The Albion Walter Hewlett Award is a department-sponsored award honoring an exceptional physician with ties to Stanford. It's named for Albion Walter Hewlett, professor and executive head of the Stanford Department of Medicine from 1916-1925, who was renowned for his outstanding contributions to patient care and medical science.

Philip Sunshine, MD

The 2020 awardee is Philip Sunshine, MD, professor emeritus of pediatrics, who is known as one of the “founding fathers of neonatology.”

2019 Recipient

Mark Blumenkranz, MD

The 2019 Hewlett Award winner was Mark S. Blumenkranz, MD, MMS, H. J. Smead professor of ophthalmology, emeritus. An extraordinarily gifted eye surgeon with a focus on vitreoretinal diseases, he has also succeeded in such administrative roles as head of the vitreoretinal service; department chairman for 18 years; and involvement in the planning, fundraising, and construction of the Byers Eye Institute of Stanford, which he served as founding director between 2010 and 2015.

2018 Recipient

Maurice Druzin, MD

Arriving at Stanford from Cornell University, Druzin came as division chief of maternal fetal medicine and obstetrics. The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine had only 1.5 faculty members, a small clinical operation, and no meaningful research program. The entire department “was in a bit of a shambles at the time,” says Druzin, “particularly the high-risk obstetrics division. I was recruited to build up the division and establish robust clinical, educational and research programs.”

2021 Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Awards

Deadline: November 20

Nominate your study for the Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Awards! The Top 10 Awards honor outstanding accomplishments in clinical research from across the nation and identify major advances in the biomedical field resulting from the nation's investment in research to benefit the health and welfare of its citizens. All Top 10 awardees receive special recognition at the Top 10 Awards Dinner on March 30, 2021. The Top 10 present their work in sessions at Translational Science 2021 and meet with members of Congress to discuss continued investment in clinical research. Learn more

American Society of Hematology’s Minority Hematology Graduate Award Program

Deadline: January 15

This award offers PhD students exposure to hematology by providing support to conduct hematology-related research. Award benefits include $80,000 to support two years of research, the opportunity to present research findings at ASH meetings, and complimentary ASH membership. Learn more

VA Fellowship in Health Services Research and Development

Deadline: Ongoing

The Fellowship Program in Health Services Research and Development seeks to train physicians and postdoctoral scholars who will become leaders in health services research and primary care research and education. The primary focus of the program is to provide research skills needed for a career in academic medicine. The main areas of research are clinical decision making, decision analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, outcomes research, guideline development, quality of life assessment, and secondary database analysis. Learn more

iHeartReasearch Dorothy Dee and Marjorie Helene Boring Trust Award

Deadline: Rolling

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the world. The iHeart Research award is meant to support Stanford medical students excited about research solutions that impact how we treat and prevent cardiovascular diseases. Recipients will receive up to $15,000 and mentorship opportunities. Learn more

Stanford-AHRQ Health Services Research Training Program

Deadline: Ongoing

The Stanford-AHRQ Health Services Research Program has the mission of developing independent, well-trained, diverse researchers who conduct rigorous and innovative health services research (HSR) on critical challenges facing the U.S. health-care system. Supported by a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, pre- and post-doctoral fellows will work with mentors on their topics and methods of interest, as well as career development. Learn more

Medical Informatics Fellowship

Deadline: Ongoing

Fellows are offered an opportunity to combine formal training in Medical Informatics with research applying Medical Informatics to areas of relevance to the VA health care system. Fellows will obtain focused training in medical informatics while also having the opportunity to complete foundational coursework in (1) essential health services research methods, (2) implementation sciences and systems redesign, and (3) research in collaboration with operational partners. Learn more
